Social media has become a non-negotiable part of my profession.  Being comfortable and able to communicate not just your ideas, but who you are, is key to leveraging social media for the modern aesthetic business.

Dr. Matthew Isakson, Plastic Surgeon in San Antonio, Texas

Over the last several months, I’ve had several conversations about a growing necessity in the specialty medical space: putting yourself “out there” on social media. Whether you’re an Oral Surgeon, a Plastic Surgeon, a Laser Technician, or a Nurse Injector, no one told you in training that being on video would be part of the deal. But that’s the reality we live in today.

I’ve spoken with so many people who struggle with the very idea of showing up on camera. Some are paralyzed by overthinking, worried about how they’ll come across. Even though many of us are great conversationalists and highly knowledgeable in our fields, translating that expertise to video is a different beast altogether.

If you’re one of the people feeling stuck, here are a few insights and hacks that helped me get started:

  1. Start posting more, even if you don’t show yourself – You don’t have to jump into full-on face-time right away. Share your knowledge, procedures, or patient success stories with voice overs or images.
  1. Shoot videos just for yourself – Record practice videos without the pressure of posting them. Getting comfortable with the camera is key, and knowing no one will see it at first can take the edge off.
  1. Set small goals and commit to consistency – Start with a simple goal: maybe one post a week. Consistency is more important than perfection.
  1. Plan your content – Take some time to map out topics or procedures you want to discuss. Having a plan will make the process smoother and ease any last-minute anxiety.

But most importantly, remember that people are tired of being sold to—so be yourself. Authenticity has become a brand position in its own right. Let your genuine personality and passion shine through; it’s often the most effective way to connect with your audience.
